HUNDREDS of jobs at Air New Zealand could be slashed and the future of the airline's London route is uncertain as the company continues to lose money on its long-haul network.

The airline wants to lift annual profit by $NZ110 million ($83m) by 2015, after posting a six-month loss of $NZ37m to the end of June after flight disruption from earthquakes in Canterbury and Japan.

While its domestic and trans-Tasman services continue to make money, Air New Zealand's long-haul network is losing $NZ1m a week.

Air NZ introduces seat-only option to domestic flights (RodneysRamblings)

After flagging this as a possibility just a few days ago, Air New Zealand has introduced the seats to suit option to its domestic fares. No real fanfare so far, although there has been the odd hyped up headline, such as Air New Zealand slashes domestic fares [I'm not sure that an average of 6% drop is "slashing"], but never mind.

The Australian Business Traveller possibly has the most appropriate headline with Air New Zealand goes low-cost carrier with "seat only" domestic fares. Still, it's not all bad - actually, I think it is a good move.

In June the Allied Pilots Association noted that American Airlines (AA) conducted the first tests of iPads for all phases of flight. AA pilots received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval to test iPads with electronic charts this summer and asked to take it to the next logical level: replacing most of their paper books and charts with digital documents on the iPad.
